What happens after the training?

Training is only the beginning.

For lecturers who want to introduce Peer Assessment into their teaching, learning about the methodology is an important first step. But the real challenge often comes afterwards: how do you turn what you have learned into something that works in your own classroom?

This is where PeerCollab’s new YouTube channel comes in.

The channel has been created to accompany lecturers from training to practice, providing an accessible collection of videos that explores some of the key ideas behind Peer Assessment and, most importantly, brings them closer to the reality of university teaching.

Rethinking assessment

One of the starting points of PeerCollab is the idea that assessment can be more than a final judgement of students’ work.

Peer Assessment can help create a more active learning environment in which students are involved in the assessment process, learn to analyse their own work and that of their peers, and develop their ability to give and receive feedback.

This means looking at assessment from a different perspective: not simply as something that happens to students, but as an opportunity for learning.

The videos on the PeerCollab YouTube channel explore this new vision of assessment and focus on practical aspects that lecturers can connect to their own teaching experience.

From feedback to real learning

A central theme is feedback.

Giving students feedback is not enough. What matters is whether feedback is meaningful, understandable and useful for improving learning.

Peer Assessment can create opportunities for students to engage with feedback in a more active way, while also developing their ability to reflect on the quality of their own and their peers’ work.

For lecturers, however, introducing this approach can raise many practical questions. How should the activity be organised? How can students be prepared to provide useful feedback? What challenges might arise?

These questions become particularly important when moving from training to the classroom.

When Peer Assessment meets the real classroom

This is why the pilot phase is at the heart of PeerCollab.

The project is putting Peer Assessment strategies into practice in real university settings, with lecturers receiving support and guidance throughout the process. The pilots are also an opportunity to collect feedback from both lecturers and students and to identify good practices, challenges and areas for improvement.

The YouTube channel complements this process by bringing together knowledge, reflections and examples.

From training to practice — together

PeerCollab recognises that educational innovation does not happen simply by providing information.

It requires training, practical tools, support, experimentation and reflection.

The YouTube channel is one more piece of this journey: a space where lecturers can discover new perspectives on assessment, explore the importance of meaningful feedback and practical aspects to organize lessons involving students.

Because the question is not simply “Do you know what Peer Assessment is?”

The more important question is:

“How can Peer Assessment work in your classroom?”

PeerCollab is exploring that question together with lecturers and students — one pilot, one experience and one lesson at a time.
